Discover a completely different side of Corsica and explore the island’s rich cultural heritage.
There are approximately 60 Genoese towers left on the Isle of Beauty, most of which are in ruins. Some, however, have actually been restored. Full of historical charm, these circular or square-shaped towers will undoubtedly sweep you away.
Your day by day program
Arrival in Bastia. Today’s journey will lead you to discover the Cape of Corsica, a piece of land scattered with more than 30 ancient Genoese towers. Once a popular spot for Barbarians, the Cape of Corsica also became a strategic point where Corsicans would watch out for enemies.
Next, head to Miomo, a village with a very well-preserved tower, and continue your journey to Erbalunga, which is a fishing village where its old signal tower dominates the rest of the landscape. After going through Macinaggio and the beautiful Tower of Santa-Maria, drive in the direction of the northern tip of the Cape. After that, you will also come across the Tower of Rogliani, and the villages of Centuri and Pino, where you will be able to have lunch. Ride to the other side of the cape and visit the towers of Nonza, Albo and Cannele which are spectacular architectural gems, before reaching Saint Florent or the ‘Saint–Tropez of Corsica’.
Night in hotel*** in St Florent.
Distance: 130km.
After leaving Saint Florent and the weathered tower of Mortella, start your crossing of the Désert des Agriates. Shaped by beautiful deserted coves, this protected natural reserve releases heady whiffs and fruity scents.
Then, follow the western coastline, which is dotted with Genoese towers, and reach Calvi in order to explore its salt tower, its port and imposing Genoese citadel, perched atop a promontory rock.
Night in Hotel*** in Calvi.
Distance: 80km.
Start today’s journey by discovering Calvi and its magnificent citadel, if you haven’t already done so.
Then, continue driving along one of the island’s most beautiful piece of coastline in order to reach Galéria, where you will come across a tower dominating the mouth of the Fango River. End today’s journey by travelling to Porto and the unusual square-shaped tower of Girolata.
Night in hotel *** in Porto.
Distance: 110km.
Your itinerary will lead you to drive past the Tower of Porto and its museum, which has an exhibition on the history of Corsica’s Genoese towers. The square-shaped Tower of Porto will also offer you breathtaking views over the Gulf of Porto, the Calanches de Piana and the Scandola Nature Reserve.
Next, head southwards and walk up to the highest tower in Corsica (walking: 1h30), the Tower of Turghjiu, which also happens to be the most visited tower on the island.
Then drive in the direction of Cargese - otherwise known as the Greek Corsican city - and its weathered tower. You will also be able to discover seven other similar monuments in this particular region. A stop near the Tower of Sagonne and Parata will also enable you to enjoy magnificent panoramic views over Corsica at sunset. Finish today’s journey in Ajaccio.
Night in hotel*** in Ajaccio.
Distance: 130km.
Leave Ajaccio and start today’s drive by visiting the Tower of Capitello, which stands on a small cliff that overlooks the mouth of the Gravonna and the Prunelli Rivers. Then, speed off to Propriano and its spectacular Tower of Campomoro. From its heights, you will be able to get spectacular views over the Gulf of Valinco. Nearby stands the Tower of Roccapina, an extraordionary site not far away from the town of Sartène or the ‘most Corsican of all Corsican cities’. Finally, head off to Bonifacio and its impressive chalky cliffs. Once there, you can stop at the Tower of Pinarellu, which overlooks the beach.
Night in hotel *** in Porto-Vecchio.
Distance: 180km.
During today’s stage, you will drive along the eastern coastline. Keep your eyes wide open, as its charming landscape is sprinkled with amazing Genoese towers including that of Diana, near Aléria.
